The Sounds of Learning to Read

Little Buddy (formerly known as baby man), is learning his alphabet sounds.  I have a great program I use called Sing, Spell, Read, and Write.  It uses many methods to teach kids.  It works really well.  We sing a song everyday, point to the letter while singing the sounds.
Karson does 4 worksheets involving coloring, cutting, pasting, tracing..... He LOVES the cutting. The writing, not so much.  I don't really push him.  Boys.  No need to make him hate it.   We play a few games if he has the attention span.  At first I thought, this is a waste of time.  He isn't getting it.  Not being the mom to push the kids if they aren't ready, I thought maybe I should put the program aside and wait another 6 months.  Well, he is starting to understand it.  He asks everyday when are we going to do preschool.

He is starting to recognize some letters.  He is really starting to understand the sounds.  While quizzing him one day I asked if he can think of something starting with the sound *a* (as in ahhh).  He lit up and replied *AWKWARD!*.  Umm.., ok, that works.  He sang the song all day, filling in his own words.  a a awkward. m m mission.  k k kenzie, b b butt.  As the kids giggled at his words, he got worse and worse.  Garbage mouth is what we call it around here.  Words taught to him by naughty teenagers.  They need to be spanked.

We read a few picture books that may, or may not, coordinate with the letter of the day ;) Then he does a craft.  Today it was supposed to be a carrot cut like an apple on the bottom and used like a stamp.  He just used it like a paint brush and asked if he could eat the carrot when he was done ;)
